How to set up an ergonomic desk
Good ergonomics is a sequence: set the chair, raise the screen, keep wrists neutral, and support your feet. It costs little and works in the smallest room.
Start with the chair
Set the seat so your feet are flat and thighs are parallel to the floor. Position lumbar support to your lower-back curve, then set armrests so shoulders relax.
Raise the screen to eye level
The top of the screen should sit near eye height about an arm's length away. Use a riser or arm for a monitor, or a stand for a laptop.
Keep wrists neutral
Elbows near 90 degrees, wrists flat — not bent up over the keyboard. A wrist rest helps on long days.
Support your feet
If the desk is a touch tall and feet dangle, add a footrest to restore a neutral leg angle.
Frequently asked questions
- What's the cheapest ergonomic upgrade?
- Raising your screen to eye level. A monitor riser or a laptop stand (plus an external keyboard) fixes the most common posture problem for very little money.
